We are thrilled that recently our Kiwi Ranger Toby Shanley was accredited to deliver kiwi avoidance training for dogs. This is a way to help reduce the threat hunting and farming dogs pose to kiwi in the wild, it can be a useful tool for dog owners to deter their dogs from injuring or killing kiwi if they do go into areas where kiwi live. The best option to protect kiwi is to keep dogs out of kiwi habitat altogether but this is not always possible.
Thanks to funding from the Taranaki Foundation https://taranakifoundation.org.nz/ the Trust will be delivering several public days in 2026 near sites where kiwi have been released, for farmers and hunters to bring their dogs along to be avoidance trained. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for dates.
